There are several things that can cause a large chip or dental fracture on one of your teeth. This could come from grinding your teeth at night or improvising your teeth as a tool to open a container. At the same time, a small cavity that goes untreated could compromise the integrity of the surrounding tooth enamel, making it fracture when chewing something hard.

In the case of a minor fracture, Dr. James R. Healy might be able to repair the tooth with a dental filling. If a significant amount of tooth enamel was damaged, this might not be a viable option. In a situation like this, he might recommend restoring the tooth with a dental crown.

Dr. James R. Healy will start by using a drill to remove the tooth enamel layer. This leaves behind a post-like abutment of dentin that houses the pulp and root of the tooth. A detailed impression will then be made of the area. This will be sent to a lab where dental specialists will create your final crown.

One of Dr. James R. Healy’s staff members will call you to schedule a follow-up appointment when your final crown is ready. Once Dr. James R. Healy cements the crown in place, it should last you for many years.
